Had you known me in high school, you never would have guessed that I'd have three tattoos within three years.
I used to have a negative opinion of tattoos until I realized that for some people, there is a deep tattoo meaning. In fact, in most cases the ink on someone's skin has a story or a reason. Today, I want to share my ink stories, aka my tattoo meaning.
My first tattoo was an infinity on my foot with the letters "A Phi" embedded. I had this tattoo done with three sorority sisters, each of us with the same ink on our foot. I remember calling my parents to tell them I was thinking about getting a tattoo and what I wanted. They were so supportive knowing that this organization had such an impact on my life.
I know you might be thinking, "typical sorority girl", and that's fine. Alpha Phi gave me some of the best friends who have been there through so much. It gave me the opportunity to lead and to participate in something bigger than myself. Alpha Phi allowed me to connect with strong women around the country who are members of this organization. I will always wear my letters proudly and be so thankful for the lifelong memories I have because I was a Phi.
The compass on my arm was my second tattoo. It was my senior year of college and we were celebrating some of our last days on campus. It was something I'd been thinking about for a while, I just wasn't sure what I wanted.
During my time at Butler I had the opportunity to study abroad in Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, and Ireland. I took two cruises with my friends and traveled to various places for work. Since then, I have an enormous travel bug. Traveling allows us to see the world differently, makes us appreciate what we have, and lets us experience new cultures. It diversifies our media-crafted ideas of far away places and gives us the opportunity to create our own stories. This tattoo meaning signifies my sense of adventure and desire to travel.
Let it be
My parents are older which I am so thankful for. We grew up listening to The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Soda Fountain Favorites, and Jimmy Buffett.
In England, I had the opportunity to walk on Abbey Road where The Beatles shot the infamous album cover. We also visited the library and saw original lyrics written by them.
For me, I try to live my life with this phrase in mind. Sometimes, we just have to let things be. We can't control everything and it usually works out in the end. So this tattoo signifies my childhood and life motto.
In sharing this tattoo meaning, I hope you've learned a bit more about who I am behind all my images. Here's to always finding and creating meaning in our lives.
