During As Told By Us last weekend, an attendee and fellow influencer asked the panelists on the “Let’s Get Personal” panel a hot topic question: college or not? So many people are running businesses from their homes so is college still necessary? Do we need that higher education to be “successful?”

My answer is simple: it’s your choice, but learning never stops. I fully understand that college is not for everyone. For me, my degree gave me the solid foundation for what I do today. My time at Butler taught me how to network, live independently, figure shit out on my own, and of course taught me the grounds for my degree in PR and advertising. I wouldn’t trade my education for the world and it’s something that can never be taken away from me along with the memories I made as a college student. I wanted that degree to be something I had under my belt and I genuinely enjoy learning in a classroom. Plus, I worked my ass off for my degree so it’s one of my most prized possessions.

That being said, we live in a world that changes how we communicate on a daily basis. I graduated in 2015 and even then, classes on social media specifically didn’t exist. Everything I’ve learned about the influencer sphere and how to market successfully with social media has been self-taught since graduating. Heck, I didn’t even learn how to put together this website in college and clearly I figured that out.

In order to push our businesses forward, we have to be constantly learning.

It’s important to stay ahead of the trends so that when things shift, your brand will survive (aka Instagram algorithm changes). I do something everyday to educate myself. Whether it’s listening to a podcast, reading a chapter of a book, or investing in a conference, I’m doing something to further my knowledge and learn new practices that will help my take my brand and my client’s brands to the next level.

So whether or not you go to college or have been to college, keep learning. I’m including some of my favorite podcasts and books below for you.
