THE ULTIMATE SALZBURG TRAVEL GUIDE

Salzburg might have been the city I was looking most forward to on our European adventure. We arrived in this city of 150,000 Austrians on an overcast Sunday. We had two full days in the city, plenty of time to see the sights on our list. Below, check out my guide to Salzburg.

Salzburg Travel Guide - Where to stay

We stayed at Hotel Auersperg. It’s on the side of the new town which was nice and quiet. Our room was spacious and looked out onto the garden in the back of the hotel. The hotel itself was nice, but it was a 10-15 minute walk to everything. Old Town is where the action happens so if you want to be in the center, I’d suggest looking for hotels near the river.

Salzburg Travel Guide - What to do

  • Visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress. You’ll learn a little about the history of Salzburg plus be able to look down on the town. The view is breathtaking. It’s about 10 Euros depending on which ticket you purchase.
  • See the Sound of Music sights. We had a map of the city that indicated different filming sights with a music note. They are mostly in Old Town. I’d suggest not going to the house behind the hill because it’s anticlimactic and difficult to get back to town unless you speak German.
  • Visit St. Peter’s and the catacombs. This church is amazing and the cemetery is unique to see. The catacombs were a little eerie, but again something you don’t see every day.
  • Rent bikes. You can also rent bikes to see the city. It’s a great method of transportation to see the city. We didn’t do this here, but we easily could have.
  • Stroll through Old Town. Old town is stunning and just so amazing. It’s basically like walking through history in a storybook or something.
  • Go to Mozart’s birthhome. If you didn’t know, there is some cool music history in Salzburg. You can tour Mozart’s birthhome and the museum in new town. We just did the birthhome and learned quite a bit about his life.

Salzburg Travel Guide - Where to Eat & Drink

  • Gablerbrau- This dinner was absolutely amazing. I had chicken with potatoes while Brad enjoyed Schnitzel. For dessert, we had apple strudel because why not.
  • Spaghetti & Co.- Hello gluten free pizza and pasta. This quaint restaurant is located upstairs in Old Town. It’s delicious Italian.
  • Seven Senses at Hotel Stein- You absolutely must go have drinks at this rooftop bar. It’s right on the river and overlooks Old Town. You can also eat here, but drinks are great. I’d suggest heading there early to snag a seat.

If you’re looking for somewhere to visit in Europe, Salzburg should definitely be on your list. The train ride from Munich is only about an hour and a half away. It’s this picturesque town that you just have to experience.

Cheers to planning the next European adventure with this Salzburg Travel Guide!
