Cape Dress, RaeLynn's Boutique || Black Heels, Steve Madden || Photography, Casey Ardizzone

I am part of this generation we call "millennials" and way too often I hear about our age group selecting jobs based on income or status, but very rarely hear about selecting jobs based on happiness or passion. Don't get me wrong, the jobs that pay well, give you 30 days of paid vacation, and great benefits are wonderful. But, we spend the majority of our time at work, thinking about work, or talking about work, so why not do something that inspires you?

If you don't already know I am a buyer and general manager for a local boutique. If you're in the fashion industry, you hear "buyer" and think "coolest job in the world" and honestly it is one of my favorite parts of what I do on a daily basis. But, I didn't just walk into it, this job was not just handed to me, and I do way more than just buy dresses.

Six years ago I was a high school senior with a car who needed to pay for gas and refused to work in the food industry. I applied for jobs at many local retail stores and one day in August, I received a call from RaeLynn's to schedule an interview. Two interviews later, I was hired as a part-time sales associate in a locally owned prom and pageant store.

For about six months, I worked as often as I could and then prom season came around. I was promoted to a key holder sometime during that prom season when my boss and mentor, Alison, saw something in me that she believed in and that she trusted. I started to manage staff and slowly gain more experience.

I went to college about 30 minutes away and worked two other jobs in addition to RaeLynn's to help pay for expenses. To say I was busy is a complete understatement, but I enjoy the crazy 100-mile-an-hour lifestyle. Long story short, I started writing the blogs for RaeLynn's, going on buying trips, assisting with other advertising efforts, and eventually I graduated with a degree in PR and Advertising and was hired full time.

About a month ago, I celebrated my six year work anniversary (yay me!). I can honestly say I go to work (almost) everyday excited about what's going to happen. Because I work at a smaller company, I am able to do so many different things on a daily basis. I've been a part of the growth of the company and have watched it become a brand not just a store. It sounds cliche, but watching someone find a dress that they feel beautiful in is truly so fulfilling.

You might be thinking this all sounds too good to be true and somedays you're right. It's not always easy and some days I find myself just needing to walk away (18 full fitting rooms with 40 or more people on a wait for 8 hours on a Saturday will do that to you). I won't always be able to people-please everyone, someone will always find the negative. But each day, I strive to share what I love with our customers and our staff. For me, fashion is a way of life, a way to tell the world who you are without having to say anything and that's a big reason why I love what I do.

So here's my point to all this: find a job you're passionate about. If you do, you'll find yourself waking up ready to conquer the day and excited to do something you love. Don't waist another minute doing something that doesn't completely fulfill you.

xo,

Steph
