Post-Grad Life: 7 tips for College Grads.

Post-Grad Life: 7 tips for College Grads.

It's hard to believe it's already been a year since I graduated from Butler University. When people told me that college would be the best four years of my life, I wasn't really sure what that meant until those four years came and went. Don't get me wrong, this past year has been incredible with getting engaged and starting to dedicate my life to what I am passionate about, but there are days that I just miss college. For those of you who are graduating and about to enter what we call the real world, this post is for you. These are just a few of the things I have learned in the last year.

  1. Paying bills is not fun, but it gives you a sense of responsibility. I would much rather buy a new pair of shoes every month, but paying back my student loans trumps everything else. And that's okay (for now). I wouldn't trade my college experience for anything in the world so making those loan payments gives me a sense of pride.
  2. Not having to study is one of the best things ever. It is so nice to come home after work and do literally anything other than homework. I can read for fun, watch Grey's Anatomy, or blog because I have time and not feel guilty.
  3. Going to bed at 10:30pm on a Saturday is completely acceptable, but don't forget you're still young. Sometimes I find myself just wanting to stay in and eat frozen pizza while we watch a movie we've seen a hundred times, and that's okay. But don't forget you are still in your twenties and this is the time to network, meet people, and go out, so don't forget to do that after you graduate.
  4. Not having your best friends in the same state as you completely sucks sometimes. During my time at Butler I made the best friends through Alpha Phi, but unfortunately we don't all live under the same roof anymore. Thankfully, one of these sisters lives about 5 minutes away, but sometimes I just wish we were all walking distance again. Don't forget to stay in touch with your besties and remember to check in on them every now and then.
  5. Learning never stops. Don't think that just because you aren't sitting in a classroom doesn't mean you can't learn. Always be searching for learning opportunities: reading articles, going to conferences, networking. Challenge yourself to learn something new everyday and stay up to date on trends and news in your industry.
  6. Take time for you. More than likely, if you kept yourself busy in college, you will continue to keep yourself busy. It's easy to get caught up in work, Meetup groups, workout classes, etc. But don't forget to take a breath and remember who you are.
  7. Finally, believe it or not, there is a life outside of the college bubble and you will survive it. The idea of being in the real world was so scary a year ago, and some days it is still scary. But for the most part it is almost as much fun as college. You have the tools to survive, so just believe in yourself, and don't sit and wait for life to happen to you. Go find adventure.

Steph
